Amid diplomatic strain, India, Bangladesh free 151 fishermen in a major maritime breakthrough

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Indian fishermen who had crossed into Bangladeshi waters were recently arrested by Bangladesh authorities. Similarly, Bangladeshi fishermen were apprehended by Indian authorities for crossing into Indian waters.

According to the MEA, the two governments on Thursday successfully completed the release and repatriation of 23 Indian fishermen and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen, along with their operable vessel.

Earlier, in January and December 2025, the Government of India had facilitated the release of 142 Indian fishermen. In a reciprocal gesture, India had also released 128 Bangladeshi fishermen.

The exchange was carried out keeping in mind the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities on both sides of the maritime boundary.

The MEA said the well-being of the detained Indian fishermen was closely monitored by the Indian High Commission during their incarceration. Essential supplies, including warm clothing, were provided to them.

“The Government of India attaches the highest importance to the safety, security and welfare of Indian fishermen,” the MEA said in a statement.

Relations between the two neighbours have deteriorated since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5, 2024, following widespread protests in Bangladesh.
