Amid COVID-19 second wave conducting CBSE exams should be reconsidered: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday asked the Centre to reconsider conducting the CBSE examinations at a time when the country is witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases.

"In the light of the devastating Corona second wave, conducting #CBSE exams must be reconsidered. All stakeholders must be consulted before making sweeping decisions," Gandhi tweeted.

"On how many counts does GOI intend to play with the future of India’s youth?" he said.

In a grim situation, India added 1,52,879 fresh Covid infections in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally to over 1.33 crore cases.

During this period, 839 deaths were recorded pushing the total fatality count to 1.69 lakh.

This is the fifth consecutive day that India has recorded more than 1 lakh cases in a day.

The new cases reported on Sunday are five per cent higher than Saturday when the country recorded 1,45,384  cases.

Active cases have also seen a steady increase for the 32nd day in a row and jumped to 11,08,087.

The recovery rate further dropped to 90.44 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry statement.

Meanwhile, 'Tika Utsav' or vaccine festival is being organised across the country from Sunday to inoculate a maximum number of eligible people against the virus.

The mass vaccination programme will be conducted from April 11-14 as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to the chief ministers of all states and union territories during a meeting over the coronavirus situation.

Till Sunday morning, India's cumulative vaccination coverage exceeds 10.12 Crores.

However, several states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Maharashtra have also warned about fast-depleting coronavirus vaccine stocks.
