Gandhinagar/IBNS: In a jolt to the grand old party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled to be held on Jun 19, two Gujarat Congress MLAs resigned on Thursday making it tough for the outfit to win a second seat in the upper house from the western state, media reports said.

Karjan MLA Akshay Patel and Kaprada lawmaker Jitu Chaudhary have submitted their resignations.

According to media reports, a third Congress MLA may also resign.

Accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of horse-trading MLAs, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, Ahmed Patel, tweeted, "Isn’t Gujarat government the only one in the world where: 1) Government has abandoned people in the middle of a global pandemic? 2) Refused to fund train fare for poor migrants? 3) But leaves no stone unturned to fund horse-trading activities for a Rajya Sabha election ?"

With the twin resignations, the Congress' tally in the legislative assembly has now fallen to 66 while the BJP has 103 MLAs.
