7 Congress state units pass resolution seeking Rahul Gandhi's return as party chief

More state units of Congress are passing resolutions amplifying the chorus for Rahul Gandhi to return as the Congress president with the Rajasthan Congres unit leading the states in favour of the former party president.

A total of seven state units have now passed similar resolutions seeking Rahul Gandhi at the helm of the Congress, a role he has been refusing to take up after stepping down in 2019 following Congress's poor performance in Lok Sabha and BJP-led NDA's sweeping victory.

Rahul Gandhi was elevated as Congress president in 2017 after state units had passed the same resolution.

On September 18, a resolution was passed in a meeting of 310 Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates.

A similar demand was raised in Gujarat as well by the party's state unit.

Tamil Nadu and Bihar Congress Committees too passed a resolution in the respective state general council meetings.

The number reached seven on Monday after Maharashtra and J&K Congress units, too, demanded Rahul Gandhi's return in council meetings.

India Today reported that the Himachal Pradesh state unit will also be passing a similar resolution during its September 19 meeting.

So far Rahul Gandhi has remained tight-lipped over the demands for his return.

However, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra he said in Kanyakumari that if he doesn't file the nomination, he should be asked why he was against taking the leadership and he would answer.

The nomination for Congress’ presidential election starts on September 24.

If by October 2 there is a single candidate then Congress will get its new chief.
