Jalaun (Uttar Pradesh)/IBNS: A 21-year-old girl committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district on Saturday morning after being allegedly tortured by police for hours and asked to report back the next day along with her two other friends.

According to an NDTV report, the girl and her two friends were brought to the police station on Friday afternoon after shopkeepers at the local market accused them of stealing.

The police mentally tortured and harassed them for nearly eight hours, the sister of the girl, who died, said.

There was only one female constable during the interrogation and the male cops at the station abused and tortured the girls.

"The police tortured her and made up a story. They grabbed her from the market, where they beat her. They took her to the police station, locked the doors and beat her again. More than the lady police officer, the male police officer beat her up," the sister of the girl who died was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The girls were released only in the evening and the station-in-charge ordered them to report back the following morning.

The sister of the deceased girl quoted above said she hanged herself after being asked to return back to the police station the next day, the report said.

The Additional Superintendent of Jalaun Police confirmed that a case of suicide had been reported, but did not say anything about the alleged torture and harassment she was subjected to by the local police.

"We have received information from from Orai Kotwali Police Station that a girl committed suicide. The body has been sent for postmortem. After we get the report and conduct an inquiry to ascertain the fact, we will make a statement," the ASP said in a statement posted on Jalaun Police's Twitter account.

After the girl's death, her family and irate villagers surrounded the police station and protested for hours.
