15 persons injured in communal clash in Assam’s Hailakandi town, curfew imposed

Guwahati, May 10 (IBNS): At least 15 people were injured during a communal clash that took place in Assam’s Hailakandi town on Friday.

The Hailakandi district administration has imposed an indefinite curfew in the southern Assam town following the incident.

According to the reports, the clash broke out between two religious groups after a group of people had decided to hold the Friday prayers on a road in front of a mosque, located at Kali Bari point in Hailakandi town, in protest against of some motorcycles being damaged by people belonging to another community.

The clash broke out when some people had protested against the prayers on the road.

The people of both religious groups had attacked each other and pelted stones.

Several vehicles were set on fire and the mob also vandalised several shops.

The police had resorted lathi charge and blank firing to disperse the mob.

Several fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

The mob had also attacked security personnel.

At least 15 people including few security personnel were injured in the incident.

Heavy security personnel have been deployed in Hailakandi town and tense is going on.

Meanwhile, the Hailakandi district administration has imposed an indefinite curfew in the town.

Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said that, the situation is now under control and all security measures have been taken up to maintain law and order.
