Met Gala 2026: Bhavitha Mandava’s denim look for Chanel sparks debate over 'simple or genius' fashion

Indian Model Bhavitha Mandava made a strikingly understated appearance at the Met Gala 2026 red carpet, representing Chanel with a look that immediately stood out for its simplicity rather than spectacle.

On a night defined by dramatic couture interpretations of the theme “Fashion Is Art,” Mandava walked in what appeared to be a minimalist jeans-and-top ensemble, sparking instant debate across social media.

A quiet look with a personal backstory

At first glance, her outfit seemed unusually restrained for the Met Gala: a sheer full-sleeved top layered over a white tank, classic blue jeans, white heels, and minimal jewellery.

However, the concept behind the look was deeply intentional.

The ensemble was designed as a couture reinterpretation of what Mandava wore on the day she was first discovered on a New York subway—a moment that marked the beginning of her modelling journey.

The styling was part of a larger narrative vision under the creative direction of Matthieu Blazy, aiming to elevate everyday clothing into a symbolic fashion statement.

Who is Bhavitha Mandava?

Mandava’s rise has been unconventional. Born in Hyderabad, she studied architecture at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University before moving to New York for higher studies at New York University.

She was later scouted on the subway, leading to a rapid ascent in the global fashion industry.

Her career has since included major runway debuts, magazine features, and recognition as a house ambassador for Chanel.

Internet divided over 'understated couture'

Despite the conceptual depth, reactions online were sharply split. Some viewers felt the look was too simple for an event known for maximalism and theatrical fashion, criticising the brand for not delivering enough visual impact.

Others, however, praised the choice as a bold artistic statement, arguing that it challenged traditional expectations of red carpet glamour by transforming everyday denim into high fashion storytelling.

The debate has once again highlighted a recurring Met Gala question: should fashion lean toward spectacle, or can it succeed through subtle narrative-driven design?

For Mandava and Chanel, the answer this year was clearly the latter—though the internet remains sharply divided on whether the message landed as intended.
