Kochi/UNI: Setting a gender inclusive model, a Government School at Valayanchira in Ernakulam district of Kerala has introduced unisex uniform aiming to ensure gender equality in and through education.

The 106-year-old Government Lower Primary School has been appreciated for this by Kerala Higher Education Minister Dr R Bindu and General Education Minister V Sivankutty.

According to school headmistress, Suma KP, gender neutral uniforms were first introduced for pre-primary section in 2018 by the then headmistress, Raji C, with the consent of the Parent Teachers Association and the School Academic Committee.

Earlier, Minister V Sivankutty tweeted that "Ideas of gender justice, equality and awareness will be emphasised during curriculum reform. But these lessons need not be restricted to textbooks, he said.

Admirable move by Valayanchirangara LP School. Students of all genders will now wear the same uniform here - short pants & shirts."

Dr Bindu said gender neutral uniform will help to create gender equality among students. The practice of different uniforms for different genders should end, she added.

Senior Congress leader and former union minister Dr Shashi Tharoor, MP, also supported the school for implementing gender-neutral school uniforms.

After the successful introduction of unisex uniform for pre-primary section in 2018, it was extended to Lower-Primary section for more than 500 students this year.

Due to Covid pandemic, the new dress code could not be implemented in the previous year.
