Pune, June 15 (IBNS): Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani on Sunday attended the Third Convocation Address of the President at the Indian Institute of Science, Education & Research(IISER) here.

Speaking at the Convocation, the minister expressed the concern that the enrolment of girl students at 30 percent in IISER courses is low and should be increased further by encouraging more girl students.

She said that India is moving from a service based to a knowledge based economy in which high quality science education and research is important.

"The bright IISER students passing out today will pave the path for India’s progress in science," she added.

She said IISER should take up a drive for popularizing science in schools.

She congratulated the Director of IISER, K.N. Ganesh for achieving 87 percent placement of the students in the convocation on Sunday.

She was earlier felicitated by the Director at the convocation.
