Tamil Nadu government wants pregnant women to register, no birth certificate for baby otherwise
The state government plans to make the registration mandatory starting July, media reports said.
This will ensure that women undergo safe pregnancy and childbirth, the media quoted the health officials as saying.
The registration will be helpful in tracking the expectant mother's health records by the health department, media reported.
According to reports, if a woman fails to register, the child's birth will also not be registered, which means the child will not have a birth certificate.
Women can register by calling a non-emergency medical number, 102, or through any private hospital, reports said.
Media quoted health secretary J Radhakrishnan as saying, "It's an ambitious project that attempts to bring down maternal and infant mortality rates by keeping a tab on every pregnant woman in the state."
According to media reports, the Tamil Nadu government has been has been testing a special platform called Pregnancy Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluations (PICME), in three districts the state for the past one year.
