Srinagar Municipal Corporation starts work on Jhelum Riverfront Project

Srinagar/IBNS: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) under its Smart City Project has floated tenders for Jhelum Riverfront Project to develop the water body and its surrounding areas into ecologically sustainable economic hubs.

In this regard, the tenders for phase-I have been made public. As per tenders, the bid submission end date has been fixed on Oct 28 by 02:00 pm after which the bids will be opened on Oct 29.

As per the official documents, the River Jhelum is the spine of the city’s ecology.

"The city’s heritage and its renaissance are painted on the banks of river Jhelum in terms of historical buildings, Khanqa’s, temples, churches etc.

"However, its preservation has to be linked to the conservation of its heritage resources from Zero Bridge to Cement Kadal along both banks," the document read.

"Jhelum will be made the face of the old city which it historically used to be," it added.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FCD) has already started the restoration of its banks under its Jhelum Riverfront Project.

However, it needs to be made broad-based and upgraded to a Jhelum Revitalization Plan.
