Srinagar/UNI: People continued to suffer as chilly weather conditions further intensified in Kashmir valley, where majority of water bodies, including the world famous Dal Lake, were frozen due to sub-zero night temperature, due to dry weather.

However, the weatherman has predicted some respite from extreme cold conditions as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is expected to hit the region on Tuesday evening, resulting in light rain and snow in the valley.

Meanwhile, the weather during the day was better due to sunshine in Kashmir valley, though ice cold winds continued.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in Kashmir valley, resulting in further dip in the night temperature at some places.

But, he said a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit J&K on Tuesday evening.

'Even though the system is not very strong, the WD will result in light rain in plains and light to heavy snowfall in upper reaches in the valley,' he said.

He said due to this system, the night temperature will improve, though the maximum temperature is expected to dip due to cloudy skies. 'The system will remain active till Friday,' he added.

There was still no respite from chilly weather conditions in Drass, which was the coldest place in the region at minus 28.8 degrees, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 20.1 degrees.

Mercury in the summer capital again dipped and settled at minus 6.5 degrees, which is the coldest recorded night temperature so far this season in Srinagar. Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen, particularly in the interior areas.
