Colombo: Over 7,000 people in Sri Lanka have been affected by inclement rainy weather this week, the country's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Saturday in its latest situation report.

The situation report said 7,061 people, from 2,271 families, have been adversely affected by heavy rains by Saturday morning.

The DMC added that low-lying areas around rivers face the threat of flooding as water levels increase.

People would be evacuated as the occasion demands, Director General of the DMC Sudantha Ranasinghe told journalists in Colombo on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology said heavy rains would continue and heavy showers of over 100 millimeters are expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-Western and Eastern provinces on Saturday evening.
