Kohima/UNI: The fire that broke out in the scenic Dzukou valley range in Nagaland, that was first noticed on December 29, after much devastation, has reportedly been brought under control with the help of the Indian Air Force helicopters, police, forest department and local volunteers, Forest Officials said on Saturday.

According to Nagaland Forest Depart Official in Kohima, the Forest Division along with Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) jointly undertook a major operation to contain forest fire.

Over 300 strong contingents were deployed to save the valley, which included forest field staff, SAYO volunteers and SDRF, DEF and 4th NAP personnel.

Sources said that they had also contacted National Remote Sensing Agency to get regular update on active fire locations to assist the team.

However, the exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, there were speculations that the fire was inadvertently started by some trekkers.

Official sources said the volunteers and personnel from various Government agencies on Thursday successfully completed a fire line cutting measuring 5 km in length and 2 meters wide in the priority area.

On the requisition by the Nagaland Government, an IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter equipped with Bambi bucket for firefighting was used in Dzukou valley under Kohima district.

The fire was reportedly spread to neighbouring Senapati district of Manipur, sources said.
