Kolkata/IBNS: The Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), one of the multi-specialty hospitals in Kolkata, Wednesday celebrated young patients who have successfully battled hearing disabilities.

These unsung heroes who are now in the mainstream of life underwent complicated ENT surgeries and got a second lease on life.

The team of doctors and medical staff, together with high-end medical infrastructure have given a new lease of life to numerous young patients.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N V K Mohan, ENT & Cochlear Implant Surgeon explains the challenges.

Dr. Mohan said, "Hearing impairment is one of the commonest disabilities in the human population and presents a great risk in everyday life due to problems with speech recognition, communication, and language acquisition. It is noted that there is a lack of awareness among people about hearing impairment.

"The timely and proper intervention of cochlear implants has a good clinical outcome and can help patients lead normal lives. Complex ENT procedure sometimes along with advanced devices like the cochlear implant is indeed a boon for those with hearing loss."

Dr. Arjun Dasgupta, Consultant, Rhinologist ENT, Endoscopic Skull-base surgeon & Dr. Chirojit Dutta, Consultant, Laryngologist, ENT Head & Neck Surgeon explains how lack of awareness gives rise to denials.

"Although hearing loss is highly prevalent, there is a substantial lack of accessible information and recent development in the field of ENT. Children who are subjected to this challenge can fight it with the help of advanced ENT treatment and protocol.

"Advanced interventional devices can change society if the parents accept the new advanced technique like cochlear implants," Dr. Dasgupta said.
