Indonesia tsunami and earthquake: Death toll touches 844, new bodies found under church

Jakarta, Oct 2 (IBNS): At least 34 new bodies have have been pulled out from under a church which was buried in an earthquake triggered landslide in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province.

The death toll in the calamity has risen to to 844.

The 34 deceased have been identified as pupils, who were a part of a large group of 86 students, undertaking a course at a Bible camp in the Jonooge Church Training Centre in Sigi Biromaru.

The whereabouts of the remaining 52 students are not yet known.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Sulawesi's Palu city on Friday.

According to Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla, the final toll could be in the thousands.

International aid agency Red Cross has said that an estimated 1.6 million people have been affected.
