Bhopal, Jul 9 (IBNS): The flood situation in Madhya Pradesh turned grim on Saturday as heavy showers continued to lash many districts, according to media reports.

Bhopal has already received record breaking 175 mm of rain in last 24 hours, while Hoshangabad recorded 249.4 mm, reported skymetweather.com.

Eight people have died, according to media reports.

The government has mobilised helicopters to reach aid to flood affected areas in Satna and Rewa districts.

The rivers in the state are also rising, according to local reports, and people fear that the Narmada river is likely to cross its danger mark.

Schools in many areas, including Satna, Rewa, Jabalpur and Hoshangabad, have been asked to remain closed, media reported.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has asked people not to panic. He is in touch with all the relevant departments and the government is fully prepared to handle any emergency situation.

"In emergency during floods & waterlogging - Call helpline No. 1079 (Madhya Pradesh Only)," tweeted the CM's office.
