Cyclone Montha crosses Andhra coast, one dead, several injured; Odisha also hit
Severe cyclonic storm Montha made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rainfall, gale-force winds, and widespread disruption across coastal districts.
The cyclone’s impact was also felt in 15 districts of neighbouring Odisha, where normal life was thrown out of gear.
According to officials, an elderly woman died after a tree collapsed on her house in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district, while a boy and an auto driver were injured when strong winds uprooted coconut trees in the same region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the landfall process began around 7 pm between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, close to Kakinada.
The system crossed the coast as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.

The storm, whose name Montha means “fragrant flower” in Thai, is moving north-northwestwards, continuing to lash coastal Andhra with torrential rains.
Seven districts under red alert
The worst-hit regions include Kakinada, Krishna, Eluru, East and West Godavari, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, and the Chinturu and Rampachodavaram divisions of Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
To ensure public safety, the state government suspended all vehicle movement in these seven districts from 8:30 pm Tuesday to 6:00 am Wednesday.
Authorities said the cyclone could impact 403 mandals across 22 districts.
The administration has deployed 1,447 earthmovers, 321 drones, and 1,040 chainsaws to clear fallen trees and debris. 81 wireless towers and 21 high-mast lamps have been installed for emergency communication, while 3.6 crore alert messages have been sent to residents.

The IMD warned of potential damage to standing paddy and vegetable crops in low-lying areas and urged farmers to drain excess water from fields.
Between 8:30 am and 4 pm on Tuesday, Ulavapadu in Nellore district recorded the highest rainfall at 12.6 cm, followed by Kavali (12.2 cm), Dagadarthi (12 cm), and Singarayakonda (10.5 cm). Visakhapatnam and Tuni saw lighter rain at around 2 cm each.
During a review meeting, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was informed that Nellore district had registered the highest rainfall so far from Cyclone Montha.
