Covid-19 outbreak: West Bengal reports 127 new cases, 15 deaths in last 48 hours

Kolkata/IBNS: Issuing an official Covid bulletin after a pause of 48 hours, West Bengal Health and Family Welfare department on Saturday night stated that 127 fresh Covid-19 cases and 15 deaths directly caused by novel coronavirus were reported in last two days in the stae.

According to the bulletin, on Friday (May 1), West Bengal reported 57 new positive cases and 8 deaths while 70 fresh Covid-19 positive cases and 7 deaths were confirmed on Saturday (May 2).

With this update, the total number of deaths directly caused by Covid-19 in West Bengal has jumped to 48. 

The state bulletin showed that in last 48 hours, 60 patients were discharged after treatment— 15 people on May 1 and 45 persons on May 2— taking the total number of persons recovered from Covid-19 infections to 199.

However, West Bengal has reportedly tested 20976 samples so far with 4451 tests were conducted in last two days.  

Earlier yesterday, amid a series of allegations raised by the opposition parties that West Bengal government is hiding Covid-19 data, a Covid figure provided by state principal health secretary, Vivek Kumar, shows that 931 Covid-19 positive cases were reported in Bengal till Apr 30.

In a letter to Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan, West Bengal Health and Family Welfare department's principal secretary Vivek Kumar mentioned the number of Covid-19 positive cases reported from different Red Zone and Orange Zone districts of the state.

According to the data, more than 88 per cent Covid cases were reported from four Red Zone districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and East Medinipur, of West Bengal when Kolkata alone reported 489 Covid-19 (52 per cent) till Apr 30 which was the highest.
