Assam floods: Nearly 5.74 lakh people of 22 districts affect, death toll mounts to 3

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam is still grim as 22 out of 34 districts hit with severe rainfall and affecting nearly 5.74 lakh people.

One child on Tuesday drowned in flood waters in Morigaon district taking the death toll to 3 in this year flood in the state.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 5.74 lakh people of 22 districts – Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tinsukia, are affected in current deluge.

Nalbari is the worst hit district with more than 1.10 lakh people affected followed by 1.09 lakh people in Darrang, 1.08 lakh people in Lakhimpur, 65,300 people in Majuli, 33,200 people in Dhemaji, 23,500 people in Biswanath, 23,300 people in Golaghat, 18,300 people in Sivasagar, 16,200 people in Nagaon, 16,700 people in Kamrup (Metro), 13,800 people in Jorhat district.

1278 villages under 61 revenue circles are reeling under flood waters.

The flood waters from Brahmaputra river and its tributaries inundated 39,831 hectares of agricultural lands in the flood hit districts.

A total of 4009 flood affected people have now been taken shelter in 26 relief camps set up by the district administration of 14 districts.

The ASDMA flood report stated that, more than 3.54 lakh animals have been affected in the current wave of flood.

The rescue teams of SDRF, fire service, district administration on Tuesday had rescued 1018 persons, 1456 animals in Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Majuli and Morigaon district.
