Assam: 95 per cent of Kaziranga under floods

As per official sources, 166 forest camps have been affected and seven have been vacated due to the floods till last evening.

There are altogether 233 forest camps in the Park.

As many as 47 animals have died in floods, including those hit by passing vehicles while trying to cross the national highway 37 that runs through the KNP.

Speed restrictions are clamped in the stretch in the Park area to ensure safety of the vehicles.

Numerous photos and videos of animals crossing the NH and taking refuge in nearby areas have emerged, with the Park authorities also sharing these through social media to create awareness for safety of the animals displaced due to the floods.
Another 70 animals have been rescued from the Park during the current floods.
Due to overtopping of the highway at several places, traffic was stopped in the stretch along the Park yesterday evening.

However, after review of the situation today, small vehicles have been allowed to ply in the stretch.

Besides KNP, other wildlife habitats of the state, including the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park and the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, have also been affected by floods.

More than 50 people have been killed and over 21 lakh population affected in the state so far.
