African Swine Fever: Assam’s Biswanath district administration bans pig transport, pork products

Guwahati: In view of the surging African Swine Fever (ASF) cases, Biswanath district administration of Assam has banned 66 locations of the district from transporting any live pig or pig feed or pork products.

In an order issued by the District Magistrate of Biswanath district stated,"with prevention of spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in pork/pig population  and to take all precautionary measures to stop virus spreading in Pratapgarh Tea Estate Purana Basti Line & others 5 nos. of villages and Baludonga & others 59 nos. of villages under Biswanath district are declared as Infected/Containment Zone within 1 kilometer radius around the epicenter and Surveillance Zone falling under 10 kilometer radius of the foci of infected areas respectively.”

The district administration said in the order that, no live pig or pig feed or pork products shall be allowed to be taken out of or brought into the zone, no carrier of goods or animals shall carry any animals from or out of the infected zone.

“Carriage of animals (pigs) through roadways or railways through the declared infected zone is however allowed subject to so long the animal is not uploaded in any place within the zone till te issuance of sanitization certificate issued by the competent veterinary authority. No person is allowed to take out any pig alive or death which is infected or subject to be infected from African Swine Fever. No person is allowed to carry any pig feed or bedding material or other materials namely carcass, skin or other parts or products of such animalwhich has coe in contact with any animal infected or suspected to be infected from ASF,” the order said.

The order also stated, “No person, organization or institution shall hold any animal market, animal fair, animal exhibition and carry on any activity which involves grouping or gathering of pigs within the zone, no person shall bring or attempt to bring into the market, fair, exhibition other congregation or to any public place any of pigs which infected or suspected to be infected with ASF.”

The order has come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further order.
