7.2 earthquake hits Russia

| | Jan 31, 2016, at 03:05 pm
Moscow, Jan 31 (IBNS): An earthquake measuring 7.2 earthquake hit Russia on Saturday.

According to the US Geological Survey website the epicentre of the  earthquake was located north of Yelizovo city.

"The January 30, 2016 M 7.2 earthquake beneath the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia occurred as the result of oblique-normal faulting at a depth of 180 km. At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is moving towards the west-northwest with respect to the North America and Eurasia plates at a rate of approximately 77 mm/yr," the USGS website said.

Note that some authors divide this region into several microplates that together define the relative motions between the larger Pacific, North America and Eurasia plates; these include the Okhotsk and Amur microplates that are respectively part of North America and Eurasia. The depth and faulting mechanism of the January 30th earthquake indicate that it ruptured a fault within the subducting Pacific lithosphere," it said.

No casualty has been reported so far.
