AI startup Anthropic has appointed Microsoft veteran Irina Ghose as Managing Director for India, ahead of opening its first office in the country.

Ghose brings over three decades of experience in scaling global technology businesses.

She most recently served as Managing Director, Microsoft India, where she led enterprise artificial intelligence adoption across key sectors including banking and financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and government.

During her tenure, she built high-impact teams, forged ecosystem partnerships, and championed future-ready capabilities across India’s technology landscape, with a strong focus on using technology to deliver meaningful business and societal outcomes.

“India has a real opportunity to shape how AI is built and deployed at scale,” Ghose said.

She added that Indian organisations are moving beyond experimentation to applied AI use cases where trust, safety, and long-term impact are as important as innovation.

“Anthropic’s mission resonates with my belief that technology should empower people, expand access, and create lasting value across India’s diverse languages and communities,” she said.

In a separate Linkdln post, Irina said: "I’m thrilled to join Anthropic as Managing Director for India. Anthropic’s Claude delivers high-trust, enterprise-grade AI designed for mission-critical environments, and I’m honored to work alongside organisations, developers and startups across India as they leverage AI to transform their operations and create value."

She further said: "India has emerged as the second-largest user base for Claude.ai, reflecting rapid momentum in AI adoption. From digital natives and software firms to large enterprises and public-sector institutions, India is entering a phase of scaled deployment that will enhance competitive advantage and shape the future."

She said AI tuned to local languages will act as a force multiplier across society - from education and healthcare to workforce development and job skills.

"I’m excited to connect with leaders, innovators and builders across India as we realize the full potential of Claude and unlock new possibilities together," she said.

Commenting on the appointment, Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic, said Ghose’s experience in enterprise transformation makes her well-suited to lead the company’s expansion in India.

“As we grow our teams and deepen engagement across India’s public and private sectors, Irina will ensure our approach is grounded in local insight and aligned with our mission,” Ciauri said.

India is currently Anthropic’s second-largest market globally for Claude.ai. According to the company’s fourth Economic Index, nearly half of all Claude.ai usage in India is concentrated in computer science and mathematical tasks, highlighting the country’s strong focus on technical applications.
