Tesla signals India entry with job listings amid eased import duties

After years of stalled plans due to high import taxes and logistical hurdles, Tesla appears to be gearing up for its long-awaited India entry.

The company has posted 13 job openings on LinkedIn, spanning customer-facing and back-end roles across Mumbai and Delhi.

The hiring push follows Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his U.S. visit.

Tesla’s job openings in India

The company is recruiting for multiple positions, including:

  • Inside Sales Advisor
  • Customer Support Supervisor
  • Customer Support Specialist
  • Service Advisor
  • Order Operations Specialist
  • Service Manager
  • Tesla Advisor
  • Parts Advisor
  • Business Operations Analyst
  • Store Manager
  • Service Technician

At least five roles, including service technician and advisory positions, are available in both Mumbai and Delhi, while others, such as customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, are exclusive to Mumbai.

Past roadblocks & policy shifts

Tesla’s entry into India has faced repeated delays, primarily due to the country’s high import duties—once reaching 110% on luxury EVs.

However, the Indian government recently lowered the basic customs duty on high-end EVs (priced above $40,000) from 110% to 70%, potentially making the market more attractive for Tesla.

As the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, India has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

With a growing consumer base for electric vehicles, Tesla may finally see a viable opportunity to establish its presence in the country.
