Tata Steel-sponsored drinking water project inaugurated in Haldia
The initiative is part of the CSR activities undertaken by the Hooghly Met Coke (HMC) Division of Tata Steel.
A total of three such drinking water projects has been taken up by Tata Steel in Haldia with a view to addressing the basic needs of communities and institutions in the region.
This is the first time that Tata Steel has taken up water projects at Haldia.
The District Magistrate of Purba Medinipur, Dr (Ms) Rashmi Kamal, and B K Das, Vice President (Iron Making), Tata Steel, formally inaugurated the drinking water project along with distribution of service water to bathrooms and toilets at the Girls’ Home at Vivekananda Loksiksha Mondir, Muradpur, Purba Medinipur.
Senior officials of the District Administration and Tata Steel were also present on the occasion.
The project was undertaken under the ‘Adopt a Home’ programme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, along with the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal, and District Social Welfare Section, District Child Protection Unit, Purba Medinipur.
A deep boring facility, with overhead tanks and multiple outlets, has been commissioned under the project. It will help in supplying safe drinking water to the residents of the Girls’ Home. The service water supply has been provided to the toilets and bathrooms of the Girls’ Home, which is home to girls in the age group of 6 to 18 years.
Speaking on the occasion, Rashmi Kamal complimented Tata Steel for undertaking CSR activities in Haldia and said: “There is a corporate culture in Haldia and I am happy that corporate houses are coming forward to help alleviate the problems faced by people in this region”.
In his address, B K Das said: “Improving the quality of life of people living in and around our operational locations is integral to the business philosophy of Tata Steel. With interventions such as this, we shall continue to make a positive difference to the communities around us”.
