Skoda plans India entry into EV market by 2027-28, eyes localisation and wider reach

Kolkata: Skoda Auto India, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is preparing to foray into the country’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market, with a potential launch planned for 2027-28, media reports said

“We are evaluating to launch the electric car in India during 2027-28 after setting up a localised supplier base. By this time, we will get the time to set up the supplier base, and the charging infrastructure would also develop,” Skoda Auto India Brand Director Ashis Gupta was quoted as saying by PTI.

According to PTI, the company is exploring the launch of an EV in India with a fully localised component ecosystem.

Skoda already has a range of premium electric vehicles in its global lineup, though it has not yet disclosed details on the model or pricing for the Indian market.

Recently, Skoda denied reports suggesting it would introduce its Europe-focused Epiq model in India. The automaker had showcased its Elroq EV at the 2025 Auto Expo, with industry watchers expecting either the Elroq or the Enyaq electric SUV to be introduced later this year.

Gupta noted that electric cars currently make up 10–12% of India’s total automobile segment and are expanding rapidly.

“By 2027-28, the right policy framework for electric cars would also be in place,” he said.

Growing footprint in India

Skoda currently offers four models in India — the Kushaq, Slavia, Kodiaq, and Kylaq — comprising three sedans and one small SUV.

The company holds a 1.7% market share by volume, Gupta said, adding that the small SUV has significantly boosted sales.

Between January and September 2025, Skoda sold 53,000 units across its four models.

The company also credited the reduction in GST for drawing in new customers. While small SUVs attract 18% GST, sedans are taxed at 40%, Gupta noted.

Skoda currently operates 315 customer touchpoints nationwide and plans to expand this network to 350 by 2025, focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

With its manufacturing base in Pune, Skoda exports vehicles to markets across the Middle East and Africa. Gupta said the company’s goal is to maintain its market share and sustain its position as the seventh-largest carmaker in India.
