Sensex tanks 500 points

Mumbai/UNI: The equity market remained negative for the third consecutive session as the BSE Sensex on Thursday dropped 502.47 pts at 70,998.29 in early trade as selling was seen across the board amid weak global cues.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) slipped 177.50 pts at 21,394.45.

Slumping over 1600 pts on Wednesday, the BSE sensex was seen under pressure on Thursday too, as the Sensex registered intra-day high and low at 71,190.85 and 70,665.50 pts respectively.

The Nifty recorded intra-day high and low at 21,474.40 and 21,285.55 pts respectively.

The Mid Cap fell 1.57 pc and Small Cap by 1.30 pc.

In 30 scrips, 4 advanced while 26 declined.

The losers were Asian Paints by 3 pc to be 3145, NTPC by 2.18 pc to Rs 302.60, Powergrid by 2.13 pc to be 234, JSW Steel by 2.09 pc to Rs 795.50 and HDFC Bank by 1.91 pc to Rs 1507.50.

The gainers were Axis Bank by 0.79 pc to Rs 1092, Sun Pharma by 0.65 pc to Rs 1307.75, ICICI Bank by 0.53 pc to Rs 985.50 and Tata Motors by 0.16 pc to Rs 806.85.
