PM Modi launches digital India project
Business captains including Mukesh Ambani of Reliance and the Tata Group's Cyrus Mistry attended the programme held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
The Prime Minister unveiled a logo for Digital India, which seeks to transform India into a digitally-empowered, knowledge economy with a host of initiatives for a synchronised and coordinated engagement of the government and its agencies.
Speaking at the event, Mukesh Ambani said, "We at Reliance will invest 250 crores across the Digital India pillars. He lauded the initiative as a "huge success".
"Normally, industry moves faster than government but with Digital India, I have no hesitation in saying, the government has moved faster."
Tata's Cyrus Mistry said, "I commit Tata Group's wholehearted participation to make this a century of India innovation." The group, he said, would hire 60,000 IT professionals this year.
Wipro's Azim Premji , Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumaramangalam Birla and Reliance ADAG chairman Anil Ambani also spoke at the event.
Under the project the government plans to provide electronic governance and universal phone connectivity across the country, aims to bridge India's digital divide, and rope in large investments in technology manufacturing.
Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government expects "billions of dollars in investment," during the Digital India Week.
