L&T Energy GreenTech, Japan’s ITOCHU to build 300 KTPA green ammonia plant in Gujarat for Singapore bunkering

New Delhi: In a move set to link India’s west coast to Singapore’s clean fuel supply chain, L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEG) has teamed up with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to develop a 300,000-tonne-per-annum green ammonia plant at Kandla, Gujarat.

L&T Energy GreenTech, a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., has signed a Joint Development Agreement with ITOCHU Corporation of Japan to develop and commercialise the large-scale green ammonia project.

Under the agreement, LTEG and ITOCHU will work together on building the facility, with ITOCHU set to offtake the green ammonia for bunkering applications in Singapore.

“Under the agreement, LTEG and ITOCHU will collaborate on the development of the green ammonia facility, with ITOCHU planning to offtake the product for bunkering applications in Singapore,” the company said in a release.

Hiroyuki Tsubai, President of Machinery Company at ITOCHU, said: “With this collaboration, Kandla, located on the west coast of India, will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore.”

He added that partnering with L&T would reinforce ITOCHU’s efforts to introduce low-carbon ammonia to the maritime sector as an alternative zero-emission fuel.

“The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus,” said Subramanian Sarma, Deputy MD & President, L&T.

Last year, L&T acquired a large land parcel at Kandla for green hydrogen and ammonia projects. The latest agreement aligns with the company’s strategy to establish a strong foothold across the green energy value chain.

India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce at least 5 million metric tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030, with projected investments of over USD 100 billion.

As of 12:41 PM on Wednesday, Larsen & Toubro shares were trading at ₹3,711.00 apiece on the BSE.
