Jeff Bezos tells young dreamers to do this before starting their own company

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has offered unconventional yet practical advice for young people aspiring to become entrepreneurs — take a job at McDonald’s.

In a recent interview, as reported by Fortune, Bezos highlighted the value of gaining early, hands-on experience in fast-paced, customer-facing roles.

“I always advise young people: Go work at McDonald’s,” he said. “You learn responsibility. You learn how to show up. You learn how to deal with people. You learn how to hustle.”

Bezos, who famously launched Amazon from his garage in 1994, believes that entry-level jobs teach foundational life skills that can’t be replicated in classrooms or through social media ventures.

He noted that such early work builds discipline, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure — qualities he considers vital for long-term success but often overlooked by Gen Z entrepreneurs in their rush to start businesses.

His comments arrive amid a growing debate about whether traditional work experience still holds value in an era dominated by instant fame through platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

Bezos’ message is a reminder that persistence and consistency remain the bedrock of lasting achievement.

He further stressed that environments like McDonald’s offer “real-world education,” exposing young workers to challenges such as managing time, handling customers, and collaborating in teams.

According to Bezos, such experiences outweigh theoretical lessons or the pursuit of quick online gains.

“You don’t need to start a company at 20,” he added. “You need to learn how the world works first.”
