India's retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to 4.38 percent in June from 3.93 percent in May, driven primarily by higher food prices, according to government data released on Monday.

The year-on-year inflation rate based on the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) stood at 5.32 percent (provisional) in June 2026, compared with June 2025, the government said in a statement.

Food inflation in rural and urban areas stood at 5.45 percent and 5.09 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, the year-on-year housing inflation rate stood at 2.10 percent (provisional) in June. The corresponding rates for rural and urban areas were 2.66 percent and 1.90 percent, respectively.

Prices of several items declined during the month. Potato prices fell 20.34 percent, followed by peas (-9.67 percent), motor cars and jeeps (-6.89 percent), cumin or jeera (-3.75 percent), and motorcycles and scooters (-3.49 percent).

Among food items, ginger recorded a sharp rise in prices, with inflation surging to 50.41 percent in June from 32.50 percent in May.
