Hyundai to make Tamil Nadu its EV powerhouse – Big plan revealed
Automobile major Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) on Thursday reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu and announced its commitment to position the state as its flagship EV hub in India.
The Tamil Nadu government and HMIL also jointly unveiled an exclusive skill development collaboration aimed at enhancing the global employability of the state’s youth. The initiative is scheduled to commence operations in December 2027.
Commenting on the development, Tarun Garg, MD and CEO of HMIL, said the company’s initiatives will strengthen Tamil Nadu’s leadership in sustainable mobility and automotive manufacturing, while accelerating skill development to build a future-ready workforce.
He added that Hyundai will roll out two new models from its Chennai facility, including its first mass-market dedicated electric vehicle (EV) within the year, marking a key step towards EV adoption and ecosystem development in India. He further highlighted the company’s focus on localisation of EV components and workforce upskilling in next-generation technologies.
HMIL has already established Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is actively localising power electronics and other critical components, supporting the state’s ambition to become a leading EV manufacturing hub.
The company has also developed a DC fast-charging ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, with 39 stations and 78 charging points, aimed at strengthening consumer confidence and accelerating EV adoption. Hyundai plans to further expand this network across major cities and highways over the next 2–3 years.
As part of its skill development initiative, HMIL will work with the Tamil Nadu government to enhance the global employability of youth by introducing training in EV technologies, hydrogen mobility, robotics, automation, AI-enabled manufacturing, and smart manufacturing systems. The programme will also focus on improving workplace communication and language skills to boost international job readiness.
The state government will collaborate with HMIL by engaging ITIs, polytechnics, engineering colleges, and skill development institutions to ensure effective implementation of the programme.
HMIL also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing localisation levels from the current 82 per cent to 90 per cent over the next five to six years. The company aims to increase procurement from Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by approximately ₹4,000 crore, expected to generate around 2,000 additional jobs in the state.
Reiterating its long-term commitment, HMIL confirmed an investment of over ₹26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032, as part of its broader ₹45,000 crore investment plan in India.
The investments are expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, boost innovation, advance sustainability goals, and generate significant employment opportunities, further reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a global automotive and mobility hub.
