New Delhi/Berlin, Dec 8 (IBNS): Germany and India have agreed on a  close cooperation in integrated sustainable transport system in Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore and Kochi.

In the presence of Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of State with Independent Charge in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUD) and Ambassador Dr. Martin Ney, GIZ and MoHUD signed an agreement for the improvement of the basic conditions of public transport in Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore and Kochi.

The project has a volume of 4 million euros with a running time till mid-2020.

Germany had announced its support for these three selected Indian ‘Smart Cities’ on March 7, 2016 and had already committed and initiated different, coordinated actions to develop these urban centres.

In this manner Germany participates in the development of the ferry connections in Kochi with 85 million euros.

"Sustainable urban development is a focus of the bilateral cooperation between Germany and India," an official statement read.

During the cabinet consultations in May 2017 in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Angela Merkel, both sides agreed to the development of this cooperation with a focus on urban transport system.

Between 2017 and 2022, Germany will provide a total of 1 billion euros for urban development measures in India.
