China files WTO complaint against India over EV and battery subsidies

New Delhi: China has filed a complaint against India at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over subsidies extended by New Delhi for electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries, media reports said

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said the ministry will examine the detailed submissions made by China.

Confirming the development, an official told PTI that Beijing has lodged similar complaints against Turkiye, Canada, and the European Union. “They have sought consultations with India,” the official said.

Seeking consultations is the first step in the WTO’s dispute settlement process.

If the discussions with India fail to yield a satisfactory outcome, China can request the WTO to establish a panel to rule on the matter, the report noted.

China is India’s second-largest trading partner.

During 2024–25, India’s exports to China fell 14.5 percent to USD 14.25 billion from USD 16.66 billion in 2023–24.

Imports, however, increased 11.52 percent to USD 113.45 billion from USD 101.73 billion a year earlier, widening India’s trade deficit with China to USD 99.2 billion, according to PTI.
