The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first export consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai, marking a significant milestone in expanding global market access for agricultural products from India's North Eastern Region.

The one-metric-tonne shipment, dispatched on June 7, featured the renowned Tezpur Litchi, one of Assam's most celebrated horticultural products. The fruit is widely known for its exceptional sweetness, bright-red colour, distinctive aroma and superior eating quality.

The Tezpur region cultivates several popular litchi varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, all of which are highly valued for their unique flavour profiles and premium quality.

The GI tag has strengthened the identity and market recognition of Tezpur Litchi, enhancing its appeal among international buyers and creating fresh opportunities for premium agricultural exports from Assam.

The export highlights the growing global acceptance of India's GI-tagged agricultural products and underscores the immense export potential of the North Eastern Region, which is home to a diverse range of high-value agricultural commodities.

The consignment was ceremonially flagged off in the presence of Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava; Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Assam, Aruna Rajoria, IAS; APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, IAS; Sonitpur District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, ACS; and representatives of M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd.

The event was attended by farmers, exporters, officials from the Government of Assam, senior APEDA officials and other stakeholders.

A key outcome of the initiative has been improved returns for farmers. Growers associated with the export supply chain received nearly 10 per cent higher prices compared to prevailing domestic market rates, despite strong local demand.

The shipment has opened new marketing avenues for litchi growers and is expected to encourage greater participation in export-oriented value chains. The initiative is likely to contribute to higher farm incomes and create sustainable livelihood opportunities across the region.

The successful export also reflects ongoing efforts to promote agricultural exports from the North East and integrate local producers with international markets.
