Amazon’s $25 billion AI gamechanger: Inside the massive $100 billion Anthropic deal

Tech giant Amazon has announced plans to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, deepening its partnership with the fast-rising artificial intelligence firm.

In a statement issued on Monday, Amazon said it would invest an immediate $5 billion in Anthropic, with an additional $20 billion earmarked for the future, contingent on specific commercial milestones. This commitment comes on top of the $8 billion the company has already invested in the AI startup.

As part of the expanded collaboration, Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies.

“This includes current and future generations of Trainium — Amazon’s custom AI chips — and tens of millions of Graviton cores, our widely adopted CPU processors, to deliver superior price-performance,” Amazon said.

The agreement will also see Anthropic secure up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity to train and run its advanced AI models. This includes significant capacity from the upcoming Trainium3 chips, expected to come online later this year.

Additionally, the partnership will expand international inference capabilities across Asia and Europe, aimed at supporting the growing global user base of Anthropic’s flagship AI assistant, Claude.

The broader commitment spans multiple generations of Amazon’s AI hardware, including Trainium2, Trainium3, Trainium4, and future iterations as they are developed.

Anthropic is already leveraging AWS infrastructure — including Trainium and Graviton — to deliver scalable performance and cost efficiency across a wide range of generative AI workloads.

“Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost, which is why demand is so strong,” said Andy Jassy. “Anthropic’s long-term commitment to AWS Trainium reflects the progress we’ve made together in building cutting-edge AI infrastructure.”

“Our users increasingly rely on Claude for their work, and we must scale our infrastructure to meet that demand,” said Dario Amodei. “This partnership with Amazon will help us advance AI research while delivering powerful tools to our customers, including more than 100,000 organizations building on AWS.”
