Air India poised to restore entire 'long grounded' fleet since Tata Group took reins

Mumbai: Air India is set to restore its entire "long-grounded" fleet, which has been out of operation since the Tata Group took over two years ago.

According to a Financial Express report, over 95 percent of these aircraft, including Boeing 787s, 777s, and Airbus A320s, have been deemed airworthy.

Sources indicate that only two of the previously grounded planes remain to be reintegrated into the fleet.

At the time of the Tata takeover, Air India had more than 30 such grounded aircraft, with extensive refurbishments required, including cabin interiors.

An official stated that numerous seats were repaired, and in-flight entertainment systems were reinstated in as many older planes as possible.

In some instances, each aircraft needed more than 30,000 spare parts.

The entire cabin area was also spruced up.

The airline has committed over $400 million to fully renovate its 43 Boeing 777s and 787s, beginning in 2024.

The reinstated fleet has enabled Air India to enhance fleet utilisation levels and bolster network resilience.
