Adani’s biggest move yet: India to get one of the world’s largest battery storage plants

Adani Group on Tuesday announced plans to enter the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh project, which the company says will be India’s largest BESS installation and among the world’s largest single-site deployments.

The project, involving more than 700 BESS containers, is under advanced development at Khavda, home to the world’s largest renewable energy park. It is scheduled to be commissioned by March 2026.

According to the company, the BESS facility will help manage peak load, reduce transmission congestion, mitigate solar power curtailment and enhance overall grid stability. The system will be based on lithium-ion battery technology and will be integrated with advanced energy management systems.

“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said in a statement. “With this project, we are setting new global benchmarks while advancing India’s energy independence and sustainability goals. It will enable delivery of reliable, clean and affordable power at scale.”

The Group also outlined plans to expand its energy storage capacity, targeting an additional 15 GWh of BESS by FY27 and a total of 50 GWh over the next five years, as part of its broader renewable energy expansion strategy.
