Tata Power crosses 500 MW renewable energy capacity
Kolkata, Jun 10 (IBNS): Indian integrated power utility Tata Power on Tuesday announced crossing the milestone of 500 MW renewable energy capacity with the commissioning of solar plant at Palaswadi, Maharashtra.
This achievement is in line with the company’s commitment to have a 20-25 percent contribution in energy generated from 'clean power sources' that includes a mix of hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, and waste gas generation.
According to the officials, Tata Power currently has a total operating capacity of 460.6 MW from wind farms and 54 MW in solar generation.
In addition, the company has 447 of hydro and 202.5 MW from waste gas based generation.
With this milestone, Tata Power’s total generation installed capacity stands at 8585 MW, with 1170 MW from clean energy sources.
Further, the company has aggressive plans to increase its generation capacity from green energy sources alone, based on projects that are already in advance stage of execution, development.
These projects include 25MW AC solar plant located at Palaswadi, Maharashtra.32MW wind energy project located at Ambheri, Maharashtra, 126MW and is being implemented in Bhutan by Dagachhu Hydro Power Corporation, 49.5MW wind energy project, Pethshivpur, 94.8MW wind power generation project currently under execution in South Africa, 134.4MW wind power generation project in Amakhala Emoyeni, 185 MW hydroelectric projects in Southwest Georgia.
Tata Power has a dedicated team that looks for opportunities in the renewable energy space and development of clean technology.
The company has been working in different areas of renewable power generation – both grid connected as well as distributed generation.
Tata Power also joined hands with different national institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology, University Department of Chemical Technology, and also interacts with leading research labs and Universities in Europe and USA, in developing pilot and demonstration projects in the renewable resource power generation.

The Company has aggressive plans of additional generating capacity by 2022 and would target 20-25 per cent contribution from clean and green energy sources."
Tata Power is one of the largest wind energy generators in the country with an installed capacity of 460.6 MW spread across five states viz. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan, the officials asserted.
They added that the company is one of the leading solar power companies with a total operational capacity of 54 MW.
This includes 28.8 MW plant at Palaswadi in Maharashtra, 25 MW plant at Mithapur Project in Gujarat, 3 MW at Mulshi in Maharashtra and some rooftop solar installations.
Tata Power currently has five of its renewable projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
These are the 50.4 MW wind project at Gadag in Karnataka, 50.4 MW wind project at Khandke in Maharashtra, 50.4 MW wind project at Samana in Gujarat, the 39.2 MW wind project at Saurashtra in Gujarat and the 25 MW solar project at Mithapur in Gujarat.
