Navi Mumbai International Airport set for Apr 17 inauguration, domestic flights from May
Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to be inaugurated on April 17, with domestic flight operations likely to begin in May, Business Standard reported, citing sources.
The development follows an inspection by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on February 25.
Developed by NMIAL, a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and CIDCO, the airport is designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which operates with a single runway.
A DGCA official told The Hindustan Times, "We reviewed the preparedness of NMIA. The authorities have informed us that they will apply for all necessary permits by March 5, and we will process them accordingly."
AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar, BCAS Regional Director Prakash Nikam, and representatives from AAHL and CIDCO attended the inspection.
Earlier, the airport faced some setbacks.
During a commercial flight test on December 29, an IndiGo A320 landed on runway 08/26, leading the DGCA to flag readiness issues.
However, following the latest assessment, 90% of those concerns have been resolved.
The first phase of NMIA is projected to handle over 20 million passengers annually, with expansion plans targeting 90 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2032.
On February 25, the DGCA also held a key meeting with stakeholders to assess NMIA’s readiness for an aerodrome license, which is essential for commercial operations, ensuring compliance with safety, operational, and infrastructural standards.
