Kolkata/IBNS: To create and support an environment that ensures employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for persons with disabilities (PwDs), a nonprofit forum was recently launced in Kolkata.

Called the Indian Disabled Entrepreneurs Forum (IDEF), it has been founded by Sumit Agarwal, Devika Majumder and Asish Basak.

The main aim of IDEF is to provide a platform encouraing inclusivity and equality in employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for PwDs.

The platform is focused on building an interactive community which includes persons with disabilities and those interested in working with PwDs.

Alokananda Roy, well-known classical dancer who is also into social activism, was the guest of honour at the launch and lauded the idea of creating a forum that provides a motivated attempt towards ensuring entrepreneurial opportunities for differently-abled people.

Dr. Hemant Keshwal, the other guest of honour, stressed that persons with disabilities should also be able to live with dignity, and they should be given a window of opportunity to show their skills and potential.

Founder Sumit Agarwal said that by adopting technology, in many cases, it is possible to overcome the restrictions that come with disabilities.

Agarwal, born with cerebral palsy and having limited movements, is a beacon of hope to many.

With a post graduate degree in marketing management, he is an expert in the public relations sector and an entrepreneur, and runs a PR firm.

Co-founder Asish Basak said that persons with disabilities are more ‘able’ than persons with abilities, as they have a lot of potential which they are unable to use due to societal barriers and restrictions.

Co-founder Devika Majumder highlighted that a lot of policies have been made and laws have been implemented, but now it is time to take some proper action to head towards the change that we desire in our community.

According to the founders, IDEF will  be a platform where other agencies/forums/foundations dealing with Inclusivity in employment and entrepreneurial sectors, will be able to publicize their activities, thus creating a common platform where all related information, guidelines, events, etc. can be found.
