Historic First! Dibrugarh to Dhaka cargo voyage to revive Brahmaputra trade route
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the first international cargo voyage from Dibrugarh on Monday.
The maiden voyage will carry methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APCL) from Bogibeel to Pangaon Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh, via National Waterway-2, along the Brahmaputra, and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR).
“It will be the first time since Independence that a cargo consignment sails from Dibrugarh to a foreign port,” the Indian government said in a statement.
Before Independence, the Brahmaputra served as a major trade route connecting Upper Assam with markets across the region and beyond, with Dibrugarh emerging as one of the area's important river ports.
Monday's flag-off marks the revival of that historic trade link and reflects the government's efforts to develop inland waterways as a cheaper, greener and more efficient mode of transportation for the Northeast.
The event is being organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), in collaboration with the Assam government and APCL.
Where to watch the ceremony?
The flag-off ceremony will be streamed live on IWAI's official YouTube channel, IWAI_ShipMin.
Further information will be available on the IWAI website and through its official social media handles on X, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.
