New Delhi/IBNS: The Centre has released the first installment of Rs 15,841 crore under the PM KISAN scheme during the lockdown period, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The disbursed money will benefit 7.92 crore farmers across the nation.

Under the scheme, the government gives Rs 6,000 to each beneficiary every year in three equal instalments. The money is transferred directly into the bank account of the recipients.

According to an Economic Times report, the government had promised to transfer the first installment of Rs 2,000 to each of the 8.69 crore beneficiaries under the scheme by the first week of April.

The announcement was made in order to give relief to the farmers amid the lockdown.

The government had clamped a 21-day nationwide lockdown on Mar 24.

According to Health Ministry data, India has currently 6,039 active cases of COVID-19 with 206 deaths and 515 recoveries.
