After Supreme Court rap, Bharti Airtel pays Rs. 10,000 crore to government

New Delhi/IBNS: After the Supreme Court rapped several telecom companies for not clearing the dues despite its order, Bharti Airtel on Monday said it had paid Rs. 10,000 crore to the government, media reports said.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which had faced ire of the Supreme Court for putting on hold the clearing of dues, had ordered the telecom company to pay Rs. 10,000 crore by Feb 20 and rest by March 17 when the top court will hold the hearing again.

"Total amount of Rs 10,000 crore has been paid on behalf of Bharti Airtel, Bharti Hexacom, and Telenor," said Bharti Airtel as reported by NDTV.

"We are in the process of completing the self assessment exercise expeditiously and will duly make the balance payment upon completion of the same, before the next date of hearing in the SC," it added.

The Supreme Court on Friday lashed out at the telecom companies for not obeying its order to pay the dues of thousands of crores to the government.

The top court had ordered the telecom companies to pay adjusted gross revenues worth Rs. 92,000 crore to the government.

"We don't know who is creating this nonsense, is there no law left in the country," the Supreme Court said this with a sense of anger.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, S Abdul Nazeer and MR Shah said they were "anguished" and felt they "should not work in this court".

The court has also summoned the managing directors of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, MTNL, BSNL, Reliance Communications, Tata Telecommunication and others on Mar 17.

Earlier the court had rejected the telecom companies' plea to reject its order of allowing the government to collect the dues.
