Vijayawada/IBNS: The Congress has appointed YS Sharmila Reddy as its new president in Andhra Pradesh, a day after G Rudra Raju stepped down from the post.

Sharmila shared the appointed letter on her X profile and thanked Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, top leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and general secretary KC Venugopal.

She wrote,"I promise to work faithfully towards rebuilding the party to its past glory in the State of Andhra Pradesh with total commitment and integrity.

"On this occasion I would also like to thank @manickamtagore ji , and am looking forward to working closely with each and every Congress foot soldier . I also seek the support of @RudrarajuGidugu garu and every other leader of the party in the State , on whose experience and expertise I would like to build on to reach our set goals."

With the appointment, Sharmila will now take on her older brother and Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is the chief of her party YSRCP, politically.

Sharmila, who has recently joined the Congress, has reportedly expressed her willingness to work at any position for the party.

She has recently merged her YSR Telangana Party with the Congress in presence of Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.

Andhra Pradesh will go to polls along with the Lok Sabha elections in summer this year.
