Will take action, says Justin Trudeau on invitation to Khalistani terrorist Atwal
New Delhi, Feb 22 (IBNS) : As the invitation of Jaspal Atwal tends to sully the India visit of Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister has said that he will take action against the "person responsible" for inviting the convicted Khalistani terrorist, media reports said.
Atwal was invited to two of Trudeau's official events in Mumbai and Delhi, creating chagrin in the Indian diplomatic circle.
"We take this very seriously. The individual in question should have never received an invitation. The person and department responsible will take full responsibility for his actions," Trudeau said.
NDTV says that Canadian High Commissioner Nadir Patel has cancelled the Delhi dinner invite to Atwal as his photos with dignitaries at a Trudeau event in Mumbai emerged just a day before the Canadian Prime Minister's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Causing a huge embarrassment for Canada, a CBC report published a photograph of Atwal with Trudeau’s wife Sophie and Canadian minister Amarjit Sodhi at an event in Mumbai on February 20.
Atwal was convicted in Canada for attempting the murder of the then-Punjab minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu on Vancouver Island in 1986, the report stated.
Atwal admitted that he was one of four men who ambushed and shot at Sidhu's car.
Atwal is reportedly a former member of the International Sikh Youth Federation, a banned 'terrorist’ group in Canada, the UK, the US and India.
