Kolkata/IBNS: At least nine people, including eight women, were killed in a head-on collision between a state-run bus and an autorickshaw in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Tuesday evening.

According to reports, the accident took place on Raniganj-Morgram National Highway 60 near Telda village in Rampurhat's Mallarpur.

An eyewitness said the speeding Rampurhat to Suri-bound SBSTC (South Bengal State Transport Corporation) bus suddenly lost its control and collided head-on with the autorickshaw, which was coming from the opposite direction.

Nine passengers of the autorickshaw, including its driver, died on the spot.

Police said an investigation has been initiated into the matter, while the bus has been seized.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's office has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next kin of the deceased.

"Anguished by the loss of lives due to a tragic accident in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Prayers with the injured," the PMO tweeted.

"Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs. 50,000," it added.
