Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat hands over resignation letter to BJP chief
New Delhi/IBNS: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat handed over his resignation letter to his party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, barely four months after he took charge of the post, said reports.
The resignation comes ahead of the Assembly polls next year in the state.
Rawat had been in Delhi for the past three days and held several meetings with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership.
Soon after his meeting with BJP president JP Nadda on Friday afternoon, he sought an appointment with Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya.
But before meeting with the Governor, he handed in his resignation papers to his party chief JP Nadda.
Rawat was sworn in as Chief Minister in March after a fierce dissent against then Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat.
To retain his post, Rawat, who is an MP, would need to win an assembly seat and become a member of the Uttarakhand legislative assembly by September 10.
However, it was unlikely for the Election Commission to announce by-polls at this time amid the COVID crisis and the massive controversy over the March-April Assembly election in five states.
Rawat's brief stint as the CM was too marred with controversies. The BJP's Uttarakhand leaders had complained to the Delhi leadership about public anger at some of his pronouncements.
