Unanimous support on the need to stand with Sri Lanka in difficult time: S Jaishankar tweets after parl committee meeting

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday attended  a parliamentary consultative committee meeting on the situation in Sri Lanka and said 'unanimous support' is needed to stand beside the neighbouring nation in their difficult times.

MoS V Muraleedharan, Meenakashi Lekhi, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva, BJP MP from Silchar Rajdeep Roy are part of the committee.

"Chaired a Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting on the situation in Sri Lanka," he tweeted.

"A good discussion held in a positive atmosphere on various issues and India’s role," he said.
 
"Unanimous support on the need to stand with our neighbor in this difficult time," he said.

Sri Lanka is facing one of the tough economic crisis situations in recent years.

The Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay recently handed over 3.3 tons of essential medical supplies donated by Government of India for the 1990 Suwaseriya Ambulance Service to the Chairman of Suwaseriya Foundation Duminda Rathnayaka in the presence of Harsha de Silva, Member of Parliament and Sohan de Silva, CEO of Suwaseriya Foundation in Colombo on 3 June 2022.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar was apprised of the looming shortage of medical supplies faced by the Foundation during his visit to the Suwaseriya Headquarters in Colombo in March 2022, read a statement issued by the ministry of External Affairs. 

Responding to the urgent requirement, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Gharial was specially deployed for ensuring expeditious delivery of medical supplies to Sri Lanka. 

In addition to Suwaseriya Foundation, medical supplies for General Hospital Hambantota, Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya and Teaching Hospital, Jaffna were also carried onboard INS Gharial.
